MID-WEEK CRICKET

NOTES ON THE PLAY

The matches on Wednesday give a good opening for several of the Saturday p Ayers to keep in form by getting extra play during the week. It was unfortunate that the fourth team dropped' out, ' for its defection meant a bye every week, with Hawera ground unoccupied every second weekThe match at Manaia yesterday saw a line sample of foroeful, stylish hatling when Laurie and Jones were .associated for Manaia’s fourth wicket partnership. Their total is probably a record for Taranaki for,any wicket. Both played capital cricket and delighted the on lookers whie the opposing bowlers were a tired crew, seven of them being tried. There were several coincidences .in the match. Phoenix totals, according to the tally received, were each 84, and in each case only three players had double figures, Tozer getting twenty in teach strike. For Manaia, Laurie and Jones ran neck and neck, and finished level, unbeaten at 102 each. The young Manaia bowler, Kitt, was the outstanding bowler, and came out with the fine, figures of seven wickets for 30 runs in the second innings. Kitt has always been successful in sport, and shapes like a player who, with uractioe and a- little coaching will improve.

IN AIT D-T ARAN AKT
