PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP COMMENCED.

CHRISTCHURCH Jan. 17

Although the sun shone out occasionally to-day, the weather for the continuation of the New Zealand Bowling Association’s championship tournament was dull for the -greater part of the day, with a much lower temperature than on Monday. The greens are stil 1 lust, however ,and all of them appear to be wearing well- Three-rounds wore played in the pairs competition, leaving two to he disposed of to-morrow. No mover than 203 pairs are taking part, and the championship lias been divided into 34 sections, with two sections on each green. Seventeen greene were in use to-day, and the same number will he played on to-morrow. Recent winners of the -championship have been as f0110w:—1925, Newtown (C. Davis and ,1 . \Y. Sexton); 1926, St. Kilda (W. R. Todd and E, Tainblyn); 1927, Ponsonby (A. Bracken bush and M. Walker). None of these pairs is contesting thu present championship, but Temuka (W. McOaUum and T. Edwards), who won it in 1923. and Canterbury (J. Angus and A. Redpath), who were -the champions in the following year, arc taking part. ’ The pairs competition is living played in sect ions, each pair playing five games of 21 heads each- At the conclusion of the seca-ion play lies will be played off. If two pairs tie for a. -section, a game of 2! heads will be played, and th© umpire will arrange- for a draw to decide which pair is entitled to a bye, I’lav will then follow until the section winner is found. Where sections on the same green are won outright, the section winners will play the same day to find the green winner. Green winners will take part in the post-sectional play, which will be on the sudden death principle, each game to consist of 21 bends or 24 hours. _ The n-a-ins competition will be continued to-morrow, it being anticipated that the greens will be in use until i about 9 p.m.. -as after the fourth and | fifth founds are concluded, post socj tional pay will take pi are. 1 A match.
