The death of Mr. J. J. Boyd, aged 77, who was well known in connection with the Onehunga Zoo, is reported by a Press Association message received to-day. Sir John Simon, who is going to India in. a few days as chairman of the new Indian Commission, has announced his retirement from the bar, states a London cable.
Mr G. H. Hutton, manager of the Bank of New Zealand at Opunake, has undergone an operation at a Now Plymouth private hospital, and is progressing satisfactorily. The resignation of the house surgeon, Dr. K. N. Hisltens, was accepted bv the Taranaki Hospital Board yesterday. Appreciation was expressed of his work during his term at the hospital. News of the death at his home in England on January 7 of Dr. Henry George Hawkins Monk, former medical officers of health at Auckland, is contained in a cablegram received by the “New Zealand Herald. ” '
Mr J. B. Phillips, representing the Hawaiian Troubador Company, is at present in Hawera making arrange-rnc-nts for the visit of the company next week.
Mr. Laurie Ritchie, of Hawera, returned yesterday from Russell after a couple of weeks’ fishing holiday. He did. not get amongst the kingfish and spoonbills, but he saw the first mako shark of the season caught. There were many visitors at the bay, and the holiday proved most, enjoyable. The majority of the deep sea • fishers, he said, arrive later. Sir George Elliot, chairman of directors of the Bank of New Zeaalnd, returned to Auckland by the Niagara from 'Sydney on Monday, after a nine months’ tour abroad, spent mostly in the United Kingdom and on the Continent. .He represented the New Zealand Government at the Imperial Economic Conference, and has made ah official report. He was accompanied by Lady Elliot.
