GAME IN AUSTRALIA. SHEFFIELD SHIELD MATCH. tiV CABLE - PRESS aASO'MA I’ION COPYRIGHT BRISBANE, Jan. 17. South Australia in the first innings made 505- (Grimmett 00, Mackay not out 36). Horrfibrook took two wickets (for 123 runs, Amos three for 127, and ! Nothling two for 59. . . 1 Queensland in the second, innings have five wickets down for 188 (Thompson not out 69, O’Connor not out_ 54). The weather was fine and the wicket good. The South Australians’ scoring rate was painfully slow i and dreary until the luncheon interval, when the southerners were dismissed. The Queensland batsmen opened the second innings carefully, but the bowling of the visitors was too good and the wickets fell rapidly until Thompson and O’Connor became associated. Failing light caused the cessation of play early.
SOUTHLAND PROTEST. WANT MATCH WITH TOURISTS. (BY TEL EGUAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) " INVERCARGILL, Jan. 17. The Southland Cricket Association to-night voiced strongly its disapproval at not being allowed a match with the visiting " Australian team, and passed the following resolution: “That this association records its strong protest against the action of the New Zealand Cricket Council m omitting Invercargill from the list of towns where matches are to be played |by the Australian team during its 'forthcoming visit to New Zealand, and points out'further that there can be no adequate reason for ignoring the claim of Southland, which from the ! point of view of district population I and that of its capital town should j have surely been one of the first places included. This association draws attention to the fact that two matches are to be clayed in Dunedin and one each at Oamaru and Ashburton, which is grossly unfair when they are arranged at the expense of Southland cricket. This association feels that- it is not too late for the present injustice to be remedied, and trusts that the council will immediately do the right thing hv including Invercargill in the itinerary of the tour, especially in view of the fact that in the past this association has loyally stood by the council and. at considerable expense to itself, has helped to finance previous tours.”
