NOTES AND COMMENTS

(By “Maecenas.”)

Although beaten into second place in the recent Wairarapa Cup, l)av id Garrick may beat most ol - the light-weights in the Wellington Cup. When at hits best Star Stranger m , a, iirst-class handicap performer, but tins season his Joint lias not been consistent. if in the humour at Trentham next Saturday, Star Stranger will prove hard to beat in the Cup, with all his SJ.S. Consequent on the present spell ol dry weather, the Trentham tracks ate hard, and. providing no rain falls before the coming meeting, will test any bub very sound horses. Unlike all other courses in this^ Dominion, the judge’s position at Trentham is inside the enclosure on the stewards’ stand reserved ior the club s stewards. For more than one reason tbe position could not be looked on as the best, so at future meetings held on this course the judging will be done from tbe top floor of the stewards stand. . Oratrix is somewhat small, but is very courageous, and always does well in j-aces run at a fast pace. She lias admirers for the Wellington Cup. but at present may find that class just While •Martarma is up to Derby class, and likely to take a high place ns <t rnc-elionse, hits sister, Ihirryancla, has proved practically a 1 ail lire, as she has won only a poor class Hack event and is shelving little improvement with age. At the time of writing the acceptances for the Wellington meeting have

not been disclosed, hence .it is mere guesswork anticipating horses likely to run prominently. At the spring meeting of the Canterbury Jockey- Club, Goblin Market, one of R. J. Mason’s two-year-olds, ran well enough to suggest his gaining an early success. He is amongst those nominated for the Wellington meeting, and if sent north is sure to race well. The progeny of Martian are noted for their long period of usefulness, and The Hawk is one that has helped to strengthen the statement. Judging from his work at Hastings, his usetulness is not yet over, as he recently sprinted three furlongs in 36-J seconds. Since racing at Ellerslie, Oimabue has done well, and will be a competitor at Trentham next week. Seeing that he was not fully wound up when the Auckland meeting opened, Oimabue should strip much better for the Wellington meeting and should run well. Henna has raced in a most consistent manner this season, and with each race has shown improvement. In the Marton Cup she only went under to Stormy by a very narrow margin, and those who witnessed the event consider that A. E. Ellis on Stormy outrode the youthful pilot on Henna. The latter is engaged in the coming Foxton Cup, and need only reproduce her recent form to keep her opponents busy. As Enlalie beat a particularly strong field in the last Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton under 8.1, it was no surprise to find her sent out at a “Gloaming price” at the Auckland meeting, when weighted at 8.8. Like many others of the past on the same course, Eulalie failed to show any form; in fact she was last in the Royal Stakes. For the Telegraph Handicap Eulalie was awarded 8.8, hut on Auckland form looks to he off colour. Last season Gascony was an exceptionally brilliant youngster, but during the winter he contracted a bad cold, and so far this season he has not raced anything like his best.' Gascony was expected to do well at the recent Auckland meeting, hut in this event he received a very bad run. He will be a runner in the Telegraph at Trentham next Saturday, and is worth remembering.

lIAWERA TRACK NOTES

(By “Limited.”) The dust nuisance wa s again in evidence on the Hawera tracks this morning, and made things unpleasant for horses and ridens. C. Jackson commenced operations by sending Vivo and Benzora a round, rattling over the last three furlongs in, 37. San Fera, looking in good fettle, did his three-quarter .pace work well, a like task being allotted to Bright Glow. Bisox and Glengai’ilf were associated in a try-out over mx furVmgs. The pair kept together throughout the journey at goflu even clip. Bisox was a head in front at the finish in 1.17.

Royal Acre was not asked to- make time in running his five furlongs in FlO- ' , Lady Cavendish and Barryanda diet useful pace work. Rcremoana ran his half-mile nicely in 49secs. Eka ha«. resumed work again and looks benefited hv her short let-up. Orazone, Silvermine and Silver Rule did very light exercise work. Eortalice heat Silent by a narrow margin in a run over five furlongs in F. 4. CaTapat worked at half pace on the two-year-old track. The two-year-olds Kaka and Sungift went together on the plough four furlings m 51sec. Bonagne did a good working gallop over six furlongs without being hurried up. in 1.22. The Lamb shaped well in a run over seven furlongs, being picked up by Mountain Bell at the five furlong post. The Lamb ran liis journey out in 1.32. A large number of horses were out doing exercise and pace work.

Roval Miint made his appearance on the. Hawera training, tracks thi® morning. He is an inmate of R- Brough’s stable, where he will be prepared for future events. Since Ladv Desmond competed at Maria watu a. filling in one of her legs has caused anxiety, and in view of the probability of the track at Trentham being hard, it lias been deemed inadvisable to start the mn:re m the Wellington Cup. ~ j Fryer has received two more aridiitions to his already numerous string of horse* in training, in Mr C. Kneebone’s Blue Peter and a three-year-old 611 v bv Tree Lucerne put of a Camp rfiiv Polycaste mare belonging to Mr H Cleiland. Blue Peter has had a gourde of hurdle races and will probably be kept at the jumping business.

LIGHT HARNESS SPORT

CURRENT COMMENT.

(By “Escapade.”)

Nominations have gone in for the Hawke’s Bay meeting. The permit held by Gisborne has been granted to Mawlas’s Bay. The club are holding their second day in June. With the dry weather the tracks m the North Island are very fast at present, and houses will improve on their handicaps at any meeting held before rain comes. Owners of both gallopers and trotters are exceedingly ipieased to the hurdle and trotting track on the liawera cxm.rse fenced. It was only a matter of time, and probably a serious accident would have occurred owing to sheep getting on the tracks. T\l r Clem Jc Campion lias some very useful young horses in his stable. The young Nelson Derby—lnora colt is most promising and the careful treatment be is getting will assist him greatly. Another Nelson Derby whose dam is an Advance mare is a very nice .sort, and has grown nicely. The trotters hv Bon Homme m the same stable are beginning to show speed. . W. Willetts has his two Author Dillon horses doing strong work. The filly will coon be ready tq race. The colt, though a good pacer, is not quite so forward. . Sam Smith has Master Cute in work again and being a good .stayer, he should win a two-mile race this season. TTramie ii« none the worse tor this Auckland and Waikato racing- A repetition of his Waikato race will win more than one race. Lena Chimes has improved considerably in her manners since joining Smith’s- stable. She was in the front for a while at Grey town. Tvnlmar never looked better than at nresent. The dav lie trots in a race, he will collect f lic stake. Beal Tod is better now than at any part of his career. He i.s not a cliam--1 piou. but will he useful- at country meetings. Lady Kevin is causing Willetts, 1 senior & tremendous amount of

trouble. He will be very fortunate if he wins a race with her. Mokanna is not quite a Trampfasr. or Peter wall, though some people think so. Sister Beatrice finished in front of a number of our best trottens. She is wonderfully consistent for a trotter.

Queen Elizabeth :is only a sprinter. She does not take after her sire, Man o’ War, who was a wonderful stayer. Jim Bullock said Dillon Huon took it. into his head to go on the wrong day at Auckland. Padlock outstayed him very easily at the- finish. Hostess still will not leave the mark till the field has gone. Then she goes for a mile and stops like a pricked balloon. . Mr. Corrigan lias practically sold Hostess, Queen Elizabeth, and Dillon Huon to a Nelson owner for the West Coast meeting. . Mr. Gasper lia>s 13right out at Manaia. He won nicely at Auckland and the dividend wn« a good one. Call Boy met his Waterloo ai Greytown. . Abruhanya has not improved as she should have. S-lie stops very badly at the finish of her races. Van Cap is said to be going well ior Bert Adams. Flemings had a good innings at Grey town; a first and a second with two horses.
