BOWLING
81/PHAM CLUB ACTIVITIES. OPEN TOURNEY REPS. PROMINENT PLAYERS LEAVE. Two riuks slapped by Messrs D. L. A. Astbury and E. Bary will represent-the Eltham Club in the forthcoming open tournament at New Plymouth, which commences on January 23. The personnel of the rinks is F. Clemow, A. O. Casey, J. D. McKay, E. Bary and W. VV. Clarke, T. Linn, H. Best, D. L. A. Astbury. Each member anticipates an enjoyable four days’ outing. For some unaccountable reason the club is rather weak in membership, the active roll numbering only 36 a's against 50 in recent years. In view of the popularity of the game, the financial position of the club, its central position and all-round up-to-date conditions pertaining to the game, the membership should be much stronger. In the circumstances the club is unfortunate in the projected early departure from Eltham of two of its prominent players —Messrs Ja!ck Harrison and N. E. Drayton. The former, who ranks high as a bowler, intends shortly leaving with Mrs Harrison on a trip to England, returning probably in September next. Mr Drayton, an active member for many years and an ex-presi-dent, left on Monday for an extended holiday in England in company with Mrs Drayton. Mr C. Biggs, an old and popular member, is at present not enjoying the best of health and his clubmates hope to welcome his cheery presence on the green in the near future. The Rev. and Mrs Robertson are spending their usual annual holidays in Eltham with Mrs Robertson’s parents (Mr and Mrs TJre Murray). Mr Robertson is a daily visitor at the green, participating in friendly games and renewing acquaintances. Entries for the championship and handicap singles are about on a par and promise keen competition. Handicaps will shortly be declared. •With all due respect to the donor, the conditions governing competition for the Kitchen Cup do not meet with the approval of a section of club members. Country members, for instance, are in a number of cases debarred from competition as one of the conditions restricts the playing of all contests to the evening—after 5 p.m. Some of the country members may on special occasions. engage in competition for the cup, but the imposition of another condition —that every player shall meet every other player—effectually cuts out the chances of players who cannot possibly attend the green so many times after 5 p.m. Nevertheless, a fair entry has been made and a number of games have already been played. KAPONGA CLUB. THE HAWKEN STARS. COMPETITION RULES. Th Hon. O. J. Hawken, Minister of Agriculture, recently presented four stars to the Kaponga Club for competition aimong Saturday players of the j Kaponga, Auroa, Manaia, Opunake and Pihama Clubs.
