BERLIN EXPLOSION

SECRET MANUFACTURE.

Police investigations of the explosion in a Berlin house on Thursday revealed that the basement of the tenement was used as a chemical laboratory for the manufacture of detonators, but the presence of explosives had been kept a strict secret, the owners fearing police interference, so they told the authorities they were manulacturing cosmetics. When the debris was cleared away nine barrels of high explosives were revealed in the ruins, sufficient to wreck the whole of the wealthy residential district.

Popular indignation in the neighbourhood is intense.

Weingaertner, one partner, is being prosecuted The other, named Stammer, was blown .to pieces by the explosion, which occurred while he was Idling detonators with fulminate of mercury. Neither of the partners was a trained chemist, Weingaertner being a fruit canner before the war. He then converted the factory for the- manufacture of Verey lights for aeroplanes.
