’PLANE’S RUMOURED MOVEMENTS.
REPORTED AT SEA LAST NIGHT WELLINGTON, Jan. 10. The postmaster at Paekakariki reports that Messrs J. Pepperill and A. C. Harris, of Paekakariki, report having seen the ’plane pass Paekakariki out to sea about 9.50 o’clock, flying fast and low and on a downward glide. They lost sight of the ’plane off Pukerua Bay. The engine could not be heard and the machine appeared to be on a downward glide. At, 9.50 p.m. the ’plane was seen off Stephens’ Island,
Later the post office reported that the machine was cruising for an hour and a half after 10.10 p.m., and later again that it was stated the ’plane was seen over Martinborough and heatheiston. It was then surmised that the airmen may have been heading for a shallow lake in the Wairarapa where the machine might land with less danger. The post office received independent reports from three persons in Martinborough and a similar number from Featherston that, the machine was crossing the Rimutakas, while another report came from ICaitoke, on the top of the ranges.
