FORMALIN INJECTED.

MAKES CANCER CURE ITSELF

LONDON, Dec. 22. Remarkable cures of cancer in rats are described by Dr. Lumsden, of the Lister Institute in the current issue oi “The Lancet.” He says that the blood of rats with a cancerous growth contains a substance actively hostile to the giowtli. His object has been to discover how this substance can be increased to augment the forces of defence against the disease when the growth is not very big. . . . He believes that the Tissues of the bodv can, if stimulated, fight and win the" battle. At present the development is usually so gradual that the tissues do not wake up until it is too late. Dr. Lumsden forces the issue by an injection into' the growth of a solution of formalin, which poisons many of the cancer cells and frees the irritating substance they contain. _ This substance in turn is carried away in the blood to stimulate the rest of the bodv into conflict with the cancerous invader. If tlie body wins,, the vict-orv is final, as the bodv forces thus mobilised are never entirely disbanded.

Since March he has treated 77 rats with tumours, curing 54. Of 25 rats treated since .October 24 have been cured.
