The highest previous sunshine record was 2095 hours 49 minutes, in 1923. Rain for the year totalled 109.30 • inches. CUSTOMS DUTY AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, Jan. 3. Tlie Customs duty for the port of' Wellington for 19*27 amounted t0£2,612,324, £2,612,324, as- against £2.534,011 for the previous 12 months. The beer duty was £52,213, as against £54,379. CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 3. ; In .the chess l tournament the final' round was concluded this morning. Kclling beat Davis and tied for the championship. The play-off takes place to-morrow. Severno, of Nelson, finished third, and McDermott, of Dunedin, I fourth.
