KAPONGA.

FAREWELL TO DR. M. M. AND MRS. HOCKIN.

Dr. M. M. Hockin, who was recently appointed assistant superintendent at. the Hamilton Hospital, left by motor car for his new home early on Saturday morning.

Throughout his residence in Kaponga, extending over a period of three years, Dr. Hockin has closely' identified himself with the advancement of all branches of amateur sport, particularly so as regards cricket and football, for » both of which clubs he has held the positions of patron and president. His ability as a batsman and bowler during last and the present season has earned him a place in the Taanaki provincial team and his departure from the district will be much deplored. On the eve of the doctor’s departure he was waited upon at his residence by about a dozen prominent supporters of the Kaponga Football Club, who desired to convey an expression o"f appreciation of services rendered and their best wishes for continued health and prosperity. Messrs W. G. ■ Cran, H. Henderson and G. Guthrie (club captain) acted as spokesmen for the party, each referring in felicitous terms to the good results accruing from Dr. Hockin’s association with the . game locally, in both a playing sense and in the matter of good fellowship. The club’s president (Mr J. A. Dawson) was th’en called upon to present to Dr. and Mrs Hockin mementos of their residence in the district, these being in the form of a travelling rug to Dr. Hockin 'and a useful little clock to Mrs Hockin, Mr Dawson making use of the opportunity to also acknowledge the combined efforts of Dr. and Mrs Hockin in the interests of clean sport, and to wish them a prosperous and joyous future.

Earlier in the week Dr. iHockin was the recipient of a presentation from members of the Kapong& Cricket Club.

GENERAL ITEMS,

iMrs C. 11. Brewer accompanied her mother, Mrs Johnston, oil the latter’s return to her home at Waikanae. Ml- T. Curran, an early days farmer resident of Kaponga, now resident at Te Aroha West, Waikato, was an m- . tcrested visitor over the week-end. Accompanied by Mr H. Steiner, who also transferred from here to Te Aroha some years ago, he has been kept busy renewing old associations and making new friends. ’ Mrs J. F. Ryan’s brother, Mr E. Oliver (of Petone) accompanied by Mrs Oliver, are spending a week’s holiday at Kaponga. * , . . Mr, Mrs and. blaster Crowley, ot Tauranga, on a motor trip through Taranaki, are staying for a few daj s at Kaponga and Dawson Falls. A constant stream, of visitors from far and near, have passed through the township during the holidays, en route to Dawson Falls and the Opunake beach. Many parties were fuliy. equipped with camping appliances with the result that, accommodation at either objective has not been over-strained. Owing to unfortunate weather, the cricket match, Kaponga v. Riverlea, which was set down for Thursday last on Victoria Park, was postponed for a week. Though its Christinas carol programme was considerably cuttailed, the local brass band’s efforts. were much appreciated and resulted in col* lections amounting to close, upon £2O. A considerable amount of disappointment has been felt in a section of the Kaponga Ladies’ Croquet Club in consequence of the successful passage -of a motion recently brought forward to permit of the use of .the lawns on seven days per week. The issue was decided at* practically a full meeting of members. Feeling on the question ran so high that proxy voting Was permitted and resorted to, with the result- that every available vote was recorded, the supporters -of Sunday play securing the verdict with a majoity of one vote. Mr A. Fraser on Sunday evening was successful in landing a fine specimen of the speckled beauties which all the season have tantalisinglv besported themselves in the deep pool at the Kanpokonui bridge, feeding well on curd from the adjacent factory. Mr .T. W. Harrison, of Eltham, intends leaving on January 21 for a. holiday trip to England. Mr j. Ramsay, of Hawera, will fill the vacancy in the staff of the Eltham Bacon factory created by the transfer of Mr O. Gardiner, to Ngaio.
