PLANES ON SUBMARINES.
A BRITISH ANNOLNCIMIXT. AX ILL-TL\livl> DiSCLGS UITL BY GABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONho.N, De c. 31. The iinsf'iiews or Bnti.su suomarines carrying airerait appears in a routine announced in the i-ondon ' Gazette' reiering to allowances to qualilieu fleet air arm pilots aud naval observers and otticers appointed to such submarines.
The “Daily Express” points out that the United States Navy nas seen experimenting with aeroplanes with, folding wings which can be panned in cylinders in submarines. An announcement that 2s extra daily, starting from June last, will be paid to quahiied fleet air pi.ots and naval observer officers appointed to submarines carrying aircnut lias surprised naval circles which hud for a long time known that experiments were being made with suomarines capable of carrying aircraft. However, the experiments were regarded as in the “hush, hush” category, and it was not expected the Admiralty would reveal this more or less secret activity os the experiments are not finishes It is a difficult, problem, owing to the limited space, to accomodate aircraft, but great progress has been made in this connection. Other navies are engaged in similar experiments, which leads to greater doubts as to the expediency ot jevenling what Great Britain is doing. ft appears the news regarding submarines carrying aircraft leaked out i*v mistake, through a red-tape regulation concerning the publication of the rates of naval pay. The Admiralty had been taking extraordinary pains to keep it secret, and naturally refuses any further information. The only comment in official circles is that contained in the lam don Gazette, which says the disclosure is most unfortunate and ill-timed.
