BOWLING
The end of the year and the beginning of the New Year is always a harvest for the bowler. There are tourneys everywhere, local and provincial, while at present a New Zealand team is having a great time over in Australia. They have had a wonderful reception, but apparently their team play is not up to the standard of the best over there. But in any case it is a great experience, improves .the standard of play and lends to an increased spirit of camaraderie among bowlers on both sides of the Tasman.
The Taranaki Tourney to be played at New Plymouth in January is very popular and always draws strong entries and provides keen competition. Locally the most interesting event for the New Year will be the Syme Shield contest on Monday at tho Hawera. green, a competition among all South Taranaki Clubs. It was initiated by Mr George Syme, father of bowling in Hawera, and in his day one of the best, players, and it has created and sustained a feeling of keen interest and friendly rivalry that is all for the good of the game.
