Beggs, a footwear dealer in Colombo Street, were entered by thieves last night and goods to the value of over £2O were stolen. Men’s boots and shoes, mostly of the best quality, were selected. CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 30. At the chess championships the position of the players at the end of the fifth round was: Davies, won 5, lost 0; Kelling, rvon 4-1, drawn -1; Friberg, won 3, lost 1; Mac Diarmid, won 3, lost 2; Severne, won 21, drawn 24; Neville, won 24, drawn 24; Fisher, won 1, lost 3; Fairburn, won 1, lost 4; Summers, won 1, lost 4; Joyce, drawn 4, lost 41. Friberg ana Fisher still have to play'.
