N.Z. TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 30. There w'as no play' in the tennis championships to-day up till three o’cldck owing to rain. EXPLOSION AT NATIONAL PARK. TAUMARUNUI, Dec. 30. An explosion occurred in a primus stove in a tent occupied by a man named Clarke, of Hamilton, at the W liakapapa huts, National Park, yesterday. The tent and gear were destroyed and damage to the value oi £ls was done. BOOTS AND SHOES STOLEN. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 30. The premises of J. B. Beggs, a footwear dealer in Colombo Street, were entered by thieves last night and goods to the value of over £2O were stolen. Men’s boots and shoes, mostly of the best quality, were selected. CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP. CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 30. At the chess championships the position of the players at the end of the fifth round was: Davies, won 5, lost 0; Kelling, rvon 4-1, drawn -1; Friberg, won 3, lost 1; Mac Diarmid, won 3, lost 2; Severne, won 21, drawn 24; Neville, won 24, drawn 24; Fisher, won 1, lost 3; Fairburn, won 1, lost 4; Summers, won 1, lost 4; Joyce, drawn 4, lost 41. Friberg ana Fisher still have to play'.
