SUCCESSFUL ATHLETES.

HAWEEA’S REPRESENTATIVES.

JAVELIN AND DISCUS THROWERS.

Merited congratulations on their achievements at the New Zealand and Australian amateur athletic championship gathering held at "Wellington this week were extended to the two successful representatives of the Hawera Club, Messrs S. A. Lay and L. Hunt, who arrived home by last evening’s express. Lay was responsible for the outstanding feat of the gathering. The champion javelin thrower and record holder for the two countries, he defended the title with the greatest distinction, his winning throw of 218 ft 2£in being only 4&in below the world’s record.

Hunt, who was one of the Dominion’s nominees for the discus throwing championship, secured second place to P. Munro, the New Zealand champion and record holder for the two countries, and was not called on to extend himself to defeat Australia’s 'best representative.

Questioned by various friends at Hawera, both were exceedingly modest concerning their performances and preferred to discuss the achievements of the other successful competitors. They intimated they had gained a good deal of useful experience, but, in particular, that they had been been gTeatly impressed with the friendly yet keen rivalry which prevailed during the games and had experienced much pleasure in being associated with a gathering in which the true spirit of sportsmanship was so apparent.
