WAR WITH EUROPE? THF LATEST INVENTION OF MR. EDISON. NEW YORK, Dec. 26. Takincr as his slogan, “Nothing Like Rubber,” Mr. Thomas Edison, the aged inventor, as I have before written, is devoting the remaining years of his li:e to finding a method of producing rubber in America. The veteran of science, in an arteile in the “Popular Science Monthly,” describes how the fear of war is hanging over his grey head and is driving him frantic.
A war of all Europe against the United States is, he says, hound to come. “We may run along for years without it. but sooner or later the nations of Europe will combine against us. and the first thing they will do will ’ be to cut off the rubber supply. Horses dying out, we shall be abso.ufely dependent on tyres for motors. “Ford, Firestone (the tyre manufacturer) and I decided that it was essential to find a source of rubber for war emergency purposes. “I hope to discover a method by which rubber can be grown as an annual crop, so that, within a year of war breaking out we could be making tyres from our own rubber.”
