should not have paid half the dividend returned.

Highfiown is a much improved

hurdler, but was not ridden with good judgment even when he won at New Plymouth. It was only his great superiority that pulled him through. Partaga broke a long sequence of

minor pmcings when he won last Tuesday, ana even in this event he appeared a lucky winner, although it

must be admitted that he ran an Honest race.

Mint Leaf still looks bright and big, despite the fact that he has had many races this season. He finished on well in the Christmas Handicap, and it would not be surprising to find liim doing even better at Stratford. Race riding at the recent holiday meetings showed little or no improvement on other years, and is one. of the handicaps those connected with horses

are forced to suffer when riders are at a premium.

Hipo looked particularly well when sent out to race last Tuesday. He was well placed eariy in the 'con-

test, but just where one would expect his well seasoned condition to tell in his favour, it failed, and Hipo was well back at the post. Still, he should do better than this. The success of Vivo in the Christmas Handicap last Monday was her first over a ten-furlong journey. She ran on well over the final part of the race, and, as she is well just now, must be considered in coming races. Vivo is not a big mare, and for that reason may always do better under a light scale of weights. One of the most promising hacks seen out for a considerable tune won in her only start at New Plymouth. This refers to Bright Glow, a hue big mare by Day Comet. Should Bright Glow oontinue to make the improvement one might expect, she will win in better company than she has yet met. Considering that she was making her first public appearance for many months, Melissa bore a remarkably well-trained appearance at the recent Taranaki meeting. She began with all her old brilliancy under her 9.3, and at no stage of the contest did she really look like being defeated. Although Melissa did not defeat a particularly good class, her good showing suggested that she will pay her way in better company. For the last couple of years that once promising gelding Thunderclap has been seriously inconvenienced by bad legs. He looked in great condition when saddled up for the New Plymouth Handicap last Tuesday, but he had not gone very far when a ligament gave out and he was pulled up. One can hazard the opinion that Thunderclap’s winning days are past. When Mon Desir broke a leg in the Tikorangi Stakes last Monday at New Plymouth, and it was found necessary to destroy the gelding, it gave a chance to veterinary surgeon R. B. Wood to exhibit the advantages of the Cash captive bolt pistol. I understand this was the first time it has been brought into use on a Dominion racecourse, and the work it accomplished more than pleased those who witnessed the operation.
