TARANAKI JOCKEY CLUB

CHRISTMAS MEETING PARTAGA’S OPEN SIX. CONCLUDING RESULTS'. Further exciting contests were witnessed on thei iNew Plymouth course yesterday, when the concluding events or the Taranaki Jockey Club’s Christinas meeting were decided. For a second day the attendance was particularly large, the gate receipts augmenting the hist day’s takings s-uJti-eiently to place the total for the two days about , £IOO in excess of the amount paid at the 1926 meeting.

The totalisator returns reversed the order ruling of late by -showing an increase, £24,800 10s going through the machine as compared with £26,264, the balance ol £lou6 being sufficient to onset the decrease on tne hrst day, and leave an increase of £lB5 on the two days as compared with last year. Particularly close knisnes, which reflected credit on the discrimination shown by Mr IY. P. Russell, who, in the absence of Mr H. Coyle, announced tne day's handicaps, were witnessed an tiie Fitzroy Handicap, thei Urartu Hack Handicap and the open six, only verysmall margins separating the placeu liorse-s in each, while in the second named event less than a need divided tne iirst four home.

As judge, Mr itussell again gave hi-s decisions with certainty and promptitude. and as starter Mr A. Vincent p-ei-lormed his duties with customary eiiiciency.

Omy tno favourites saluted the judge in iiivst position, but with the exception of Green acre, whose victory in tue opening race proved the gem of tne meeting to a comparatively few investors, and Miss Mercia, which was tne seventh order in the Urutu Hack heal of nine, the remaining winners were lairiy well supported. From a good field of nine, the honours in the New Plymouth Open Handicap were annexed by the New Plymouth owned and tramed gelding Manly, second plaae being taken by Mr K. Tito’s gelding Paitonu, trained by r Mr' J. Fryer, of Hawera. Last year’s winner. The Lamb, was made favourite, but failed to show out at the finish.

First place in the event of next importance, the Inglewood Handicap, went to Mr C. Tonks’ gelding Partaga, trained by Mr C. Jackson, of Hawera, with Mr A. Spratt’s Orcades —another or Mr J. Fryer’s charges—only a head back in (second berth. The list of winning owners at the meeting was headed by Mr D. I. George, with £270, Mr H. Cleland being next with, £225 and a cup valued at £25. Others whose winnings reach-a three figures were- Messrs Arnold Bros., £2lO, C. Tonks £l9O, Mrs F. McDonald £lB5, E. George £175, J. Hanks £l7O, J. Frederic £145, J. Pater, son £l3O, i. O’Sullivan £lls, A. M. Zimmerman £lls. H. Tito £llO, J. E. palmer £lO5. and Mrs J. M. Watson £IOO. With two winners each, Messrs J. Fryer and C. Jackson (Hawera) and .J. Butler (Stratford) were the most successful trainers. Other trainers whose charges secured a first place were Messrs M. Conway, E. J. Murtagh and R. Brough (Hawera), A. J. McArthur, E- George, W. F. Mantle and J. O’Neill (New Plymouth), J. Thacker (Stratford), J. Hanks (Te Aroha), and F. Smith (Takapuna). The most oensistent rider was T. Tito, of Hawera, who piloted three winners, four seconds and a third, and who secured a place with each of Lis seven mounts on the second day. M. Grav and C. Browns each rode two winners and one each wa.s ridden home ]>v T. Todd, W. Tricklebank, J. Tucker, C. McCarthy, B. Mills, L. George, L. A. Pine, L. Coleman, and L. F- Butterworth.

Hipo, The Lamb, Golden Krist, and Paitonu cleared the tapes practically together, but Mint Leaf was showing up with The Lamb in pride of place as they left the straight. Turning into the back Paitonu made an effort, and led with two lengths to spare from Hipo. The Lamb, Golden Krist, Sleepy Sol, and Lady Anstruther, with Manly and Thunderclap running last. Manly moved up over the next distance, and three furlongs from home the lending order was Paitonu, The Lamb, Hipo, and Golden Krist bunched, with Manly close up. From a good start Flying Snot, Airtight, Sovena, and Always was lirst to show out, Airtight forcing tne pace to lead Bent, lllingar, Always, Bisox and Sovena into iho back. Miss Mercia was then tailing me field. Along the back Bent ran up to head Airtight, Flying Shot, Always, and lllingar. The same pair led on terms when rounding the top bend, Miss Mercia still being well back, but positions changed over the next distance, and lllingar led into the straight from Bisox, Airtight, and Miss Mercia. Half-way down the straight Airtight and Bisox were contending the lead, vvnen Miss Mercia made a bid on the outside and Sovena also came through. In a thrilling finish. Miss Mercia's colours Hashed home by a bare head from Airtight, with Sovena just beaten by' a nose for second money and Bisox a close fourth, less than a neck separating the fom - . At the high school bend Tip Tree was closing up and Nastori was temporarily prominent. As the van approached the home turn Quillfire held a very slight advantage from Oration, Partaga. and Tip Tree together, and though Oration headed Quillfire and Partaga into the straight, Partaga finished best to get first place by a head from Orcades, which made a last minute bid with Tip Thee a length back followed by Glengariff, O'ration. Quillfire, Nastori and Toapaiti. Time, 1.14 3-5.

Town Bird began best, but was soon joined by Exalted, the pair leading Seastar -and Royal Acre to the top of the back stretch, where the quartette were well clear of the remaining two. At the home turn Town Bird was just in front of Exalted, Royal Acre and Seastar, with The Swell coming fast, -and in the dash home Royal Acre justified pub’dc confidence by winning with two and a half lengths' to spare from Town Bird, with The Swell, whose burst of speed lessened over the concluding few strides, a neck back third.
