‘CRIME” OF TRESPASSING

SQUIRE’S DAUGHTER IN COURT

At Linton, Cambridgeshire, recently, Miss Doreen Long, of The Place, Baloham, was summoned for assaulting Uatlieririe Daniels, aged 14, the eldest of six children, whom, it was alleged, she had punished for trespassing, by Hitting them with the stock of a whip, rhe children, aged 14 to four, were brothers and sisters, and, it was stated, they had gone to a field to sear h for walnuts. It was alleged that Miss Long, the •daughter of the squire, to whom the held belonged, and by whom the children’s father was employed, had called them to the house, and, giving them the choice between a whipping and a summons, had chastised them with a whipstock. The mother stated that .the children complained of having been beaten, and she found they were badly bruised. Inspector Cook, of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children, said all the children were bruised. Catherine had a bruised hand and a swollen thumb.

Miss Long said the mother had given her permission to “rap”, the children, but this the mother denied. The chairman said it was obvious that Miss Long had taken the law into her own hands, and she might think herself IncKy that summonses had not been taken out in respect -of all the •Uildren. She was hound over for 12 months, and was ordered to pay the costs.
