OLD HOUSE CONDEMNED.
DEMOLITION RECOMMENDED. The matter of the demolition of an old hones within the Borough of Hawera, which inks- been condemned; by the medical officer of health was discussed at last evening’s meeting of the Hawera Borough Council. The medical officer of health (Dr. R. •J. R. Mecredy) advised that hi* had in sppeted the buildings of a residence in Wilson Street and had found them to lie in an exceedingly dilapidated condition. He therefore recommended the council to' issue) a- demolition order under the provisions of the Health Act for the premises and outbuildings on tho grounds that they were unfit for | use or occupation and_ dangerous to the health of the occupiers. The Mayor (Mr E. A. Pacey) asked what was the council’s position in the matter. He indicated, that ho was not prepared to accept the recommendation of the medical officer in such a case, as he had known of instances of houses that could quite well be repaired bring condemned. Or W. G- Simpson remarked 1 that the particular house was the "rottenetst slum in Hawera,” The Mayor considered, however, that; it was probable; the house could be repaired. „ _ ... The town clerk (Mr H. S. Elliott) stated that the council was not- obliged to take action in respect of such a recommendation, hut were the advice* to come from the' Board of Health the demolition must he carried out The matter was deferred until npxt meeting, in order that- councillors might have an opportunity of inspecting the dwelling.
