SKJELLERUP’S COMET.
WATCHERS DISAPPOINTED
BY CARLE—PILES3 ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHI LONDON, Dec. 19.
Many watchers with telescopes waited for Skjelle-rup’s Comet on Parliament Hill, Hampstead Heath, and other high ground in London, but the sky was overcast and the conditions even defeated Greenwich Observatory. Dr. W. H. Stevenson, president of the British Astronomical Association, however, hopes it will he seen this evening and to-morrow about 4.45 p.m., as German advices sav the visitor is of the first magnitude and will be visible on northern latitudes- for at least 10 days, when the moon will fortunately be absent. Telegrams from Berlin state that the best- observation was obtained at Hanover on Friday, when the comet was seen most brilliantly near the sun,' with a short tail turned upwards away from the sun. It is expected the- stumpy tail will increase- in length daily until after Christmas. The -sky in Germany has unfortunately been cloudy sin n o the- Hanover observation.
