In the Federal Arbitration Court, counsel for the Commonwealth Steamship Owners’ Association applied for a direction from the- Court to the Queensland branch, of the Waterside Workers’ Federation to cease- breaking the Queensland branch waterside award. The secretary of the Queensland branch of the Watersiders’ Federation said that his branch did not want the federation to interfere in State awards. The two awards were not connected. Judge Boe-by ruled that the- Queensland State award was outside the jurisdiction of the Federal Arbitration Court, and he. refused t'o give the direction sought. Judge Beeby added that he proposed to submit a. scheme- to- the watersiders and shifj-owners of the Commonwealth for expediting the 'handling of cargo, payment to -be made- on the basis of the quantities handled.
