Miss Gleitze, starting in smooth water, in her attempt to swim across He straits of Gibraltar, used the side stroke effectively but on encountering the Levanter was forced to resort to the breast stroke. In her constant struggle with the waves feeding became difficult. Her trainer 's boat was often in danger of swamping and the oeeupants, except the professional sea lmm, became seasick. The gale giev\ worse and it was considered useless to continue. The swimmer encountered porpoises hut no sharks., .Miss Gleitze is confident of succeeding in calm water as the strait is -.5 miles wide at the widest part contiactjun to .about nine miles in the eastward. The Levanter is a prevalent oast wind which frequently causes a croppy sea, however.
