ENTERTAINMENTS.

♦ OPERA HOUSE TO-NIGHT. CHINESE VAUDEVILLE AND PICTURES. Patrons of the Opera House to-night will have an opportunity of witnessing Chun Yuen Tai, a very versatile Chinese conjuror and cartoonist, who has been specially engaged by the management for a season of two nights and a matinee. Chun Yuen Tai lias just completed a successful tour with the Puller-May\vard circuit. The act presented l>y Oh.un Yuen Tai consists of a variety act of Chinese paper manipulations, silk conjuring, and native Chinese magic. His cartoons are decidedly novel, and lie will introduce some double-handed sketching which has made Chun Yuen Tai famous in China. Chun Yuen Tai wears some beautiful costumes as well as draping his ‘-props” with genuine Chinese tapestries. The picture programme is headed by the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer comedy, “The Waning Sex,” featuring Norma Shearer. With every picture Norma Shearer advances steadily towards her destiny as the most popular star, and her performance in “The Waning Sex” is a revelation of captivating artistry and charm. Witty sub-titles, farcical situations, a cleverly developed and unfolded story, and a charming star in the principal role, aided by Conrad Nagel, are responsible for an excellent picture. The supporting programme will include a comedy, gazette, and New Zealand scenic. Children are reminded that there will be a special matinee to-morrow at 2 p.m. EMPRESS PICTURES, MANAIA. TO-NIGHT (FRIDAY). “:John Bull,” London: “Married Love” is an outstanding film production for the year. Dr Marie Stapes is to be congratulated for the delicate way in which she has handled this subject,' and we are pleased to record the fact that this is the first time we can find only praise for the cinema, which is the greatest educational medium of modern times. “The Daily Mail,” London: “Married Love” is one of the finest stories ever filmed. It is good, clean entertainment, worthy of pride of place in an cinema. Out of the vital material the author has conceived a story which can best be described as a human document, and is entirely free from any salacious or objectionable matter. ’ ’
