New Zealand’s natural beauties, particularly the splendours of the .Southern Alps, which he described <a& being almost unique in the British Empire, were warmly praised by the Rt. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery (Secretary of State for - Dominion Affairs) when he was entertained at luncheon to-day by the members of the New Zealand) Club and the University Cub. He expressed the opinion, howpver, that the Alps could he developed for the benefit of the neopie of the Dominion in preference Lo encouraging tourists to comic and enjoy them. “A mucli more important use can be made of the beauties of your country and its opportunities for sport,” he said, “by enjoying these facilities yourselves and by regarding them .as an asset in strengthening the health and mind of vour own people. You have in vonr maintain* a wonderful playground which von have not made .use of for yourselves. These facilities '•mild he (nought to the door of every •\l>Y-bodied person, young or old, rich or poor. ‘‘There is a wonderful opportunity here for making more of your country, t is a thing that can be done, not- so much through tourist agencies, but rather by the young people of New Zealand if they will get together and organise themselves so as to bo able, •it a reasonable cost, to secure the proper enjoyment of their heritage.
