YOUTHFUL ATHLETES.
PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS. DIXON BANNER! COMPETITION The annual South Taranaki primary schools’ athletic championships for the Dixon Banner and Bennett and Sutton Cup were commenced at the Hawera Showgrounds to-day iu dull weather, with occasional light showers, which served in no respect to dampen the enthusiasm of the competitors. There was a fair attendance of the general public as well as competitors for the opening and thja events which were despatched with the utmost speed. For this year’s competition entries from 265 boys and 150 girls representing 21 schools from, all parts of South Taranaki had been received, and in addition to this large number all the .teams were supported by a large contingent of schoolmates. The children 'arrived in trains, buses and motor cars and proceeded to the grounds with evident enthusiasm.
The competitions were for school teams, it being necessary for each school to enter one team for each 300 pupils attending for the Dixon Banner competition, while the Bennett and Sutton Cup was available for all of under 150 pupi ! ,s. The teams competing with the abbreviated letters and colours were as follow: — Alima. Oxford and Cambridge blues; Gkaiawa (OK), navy blue and maroon; Ohangai (OH), Emerald green and white; Nornianby (N), black and green; Piham.a (P), red and blue; Riverlea R), red black and blue; Tawhiti (T), hue and white; Te Kiri (TI), black and led; Te Roti (TR). red; Turuturu (TU), green and gold; Tokaora (TO), Emerald green; Mangatoki (MA). Gray A the sports progressed the sky cleared and the afternoon events were held in fine weather although a- strong westerly wind was inclined to affect the times registered by the competitors. A capable band of helpers from the Women?,s National Reserve entertained the officials and visiting teachers at luncheon and the conducted two refreshment stalls on the ground. number of lady assistants conducted numerous races for the smaller children, some 200 priizeis hieing distributed. . The following schools were eligible for the Bennett and Sutton Cup: Auroa, Eltham Boys’ Home, Fraser Bond, Ivapuni, Matapu, Oeo, Oliangai, Fihama, Riverlea. To Kiri, Te lloti, Turuturu, Tolcaora, and Mangatolci. At the commencement the president (Mr. Purser) said that it was hoped that this year’s competition would prove a record. He paid a tribute to the assistance given to the committee by the Press, and referred to the value of the sports in the development of the physique of the children. He announced that points prizes had been donated bv Mr. H. G. Dicike, M.P.. and Mr. A. Bees. Mr. Purser referred to the absence of the secretary (Mr. J. E. Campbell), who had shown _ the greatest interest in the competition. Mr. E. Dixon (patron) stressed that as the Education Board had given a holiday for the sports all the children |of the schools should attend. He ' then declared the sports open.
