NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Maecenas.”) Acceptances for the Mauawatu Racing Club’s summer meeting close on Friday next, 16th inst. The older division will have a lot of trouble and require luck on their side in the Railway Handicap to head off three-year-olds of the calibre of Gaseonv, Cimabue and Paganelli. Up till Friday last, no rider had been engaged for Gascony at Auckland. An effort was made to secure J. Barry, but he is to be at Awapuni to ride Kiosk and Limosa on Boxing Day. I understand W. 'H. Jones was also asked to ride Gascony, 'but he too, had to turn down this splendid opportunity of a Will - x xl ■ Bennanee looked very well <it tlie Woodville meeting, and ran well enough, when one considers the trouble he got into. . In the Metropolitan Handicap at the late meeting of the Canterbury Jockey Club, Lady Desmond was left fully a dozen lengths, and then her rider foolishly rusned her up to the field in less than two furlongs, she also got a bad bump at the critical stage, but ir * face of these disadvantages finished well up. On this showing Lady Desnrond should run well in the Mauawatu °Yn Courageous and Thurnbell, Mr. W. E. Kemble has a pair of promising hacks, that look certain to earn distinction at the holiday meetings. In his last dozen starts, Kalos has run second no less than seven times, an unlucky record that takes some beating. This is almost equalled by Partaga, who in his last thirteen starts has has finished second seven times. Amplifier (Leighton-Lady D) who finished a close second in the two-year-old race at Woodville last Thursday, gave promise of being at least useful when fully seasoned. The sprint races on either day at Woodville were captured by Royal Daman and Cimabue, both of which are engaged in, and are said to be. certain starters for, the Railway Handicap, to be decided at Ellerslie on Boxing Day. Desert Glow’s second in the Taumarunui 'Cup on Saturday last, would not gain that gelding any supporters for his Auckland Cup engagement. With horses distributed throughout tee various provinces in most of, if not all in which race meetings are held, it is not surprising, to find clubs disappoint, cd with their holiday nominations. Those received by the Taranaki Jockey Ciub arc hardly to the class the prize money warranted, but the Stratior-a Racing Club’s list is just about up to tin average of recent years. Amongst those nominated for the Stratford Cup, appears the names of Piuthair and Civility. This pair are also engaged at other holiday meetings, so their competing at the. Stratford meeting is only problimatical. In nominating their horses of mferior grade fit the Taranaki and Stiatford meeting. Auckland owners have used some judgment. At the Ellerslie meeting, these animals would have little or no chance, but now when nominated in their own class, there is the chance of getting on the prize list. After his good showing at Woodville, Cimabue will be' much favoured for the Railway Handicap, and if he improves as can be expected, then he is going to be one of the hardest to beat. Mr. W. 'G. Steed’s two-year-olds, Ridgemont and The Earth, were at Woodville for their only engagement (this pair were 'only nominated for the first dav) but. owing to very heavy.ram and the likelihood of a soft track they were withdrawn. The pair were galloped after the second day’s races and went particularly well. Moutoa Treasury (Money OrderWoutoa Ivanova) has shown plenty on sneocl in private, and in consequence, was solidly supported by her connections for her first day’s engagement at the Woodville meeting, but as her owner did not bother attending the second day’s racing, one may assume, that her good dividend the second day. was not of* much benefit to Mr. I. B. Easton. This filly showed great pace and gameness. The annual meeting of the Waipa Racing Club is set down for Saturday r.ext. Some two or three years ago, this gathering served as a guide ot the pi aspects of certain horses held at the more important meeting of the Auek land Racing Club, but the last couple of meetings held at Waipa were or medioere standard. As there is some o-ood class horses engaged there on Saturday next the gathering may reinstate 'itself as a “dress rehearsal to Ellerslie.
