NOTES AND COMMENTS. (By “Maecenas.”) The Spring meeting of the Woodville Jockey Club is set down for Wednesday and Thursday next. Troilus put up a big fight against Pouri for over a mile and a half on the opening day of the Eeilding Jockey Club’s meeting, but tired badly over the final stages. Bonogne ran two excellent races at the recent Ashhurst meeting, but was never prominent on Wednesday at Eeilding. The fast pace set by Covent Garden was all against Bonogne’s chance. Tone was very unlucky in her only start at the Eeilding meeting, but looks certain to get on the winning list in the near future.

Euphonium rail a solid race in the Eeilding Cup and can be counted unlucky in striking Joy Bird when in her best galloping mood. This event was the first win Joy Bird has had over a period of nine months. . Kawhakina ran quite a creditable race on the first day of the Eeilding meeting, and on the showing should at least pay his way during the holiday* race meetings. Vivo received fair support for her first day’s engagement at Feilding, but a good chance of second place was spoilt by her getting a bad run. Ituanui gave promise in his early two-year-old career, but subsequently lost form. However, last Wednesday he gave an excellent display to win at the Feilding meeting. Paitonu looked well when sent out to contest the Feilding Cup. He pulled very hard over the first half and then got into a good position, only to weaken at the finish.

Lady Cavendish showed something of her old-time brilliancy last Wednesday, and but for a slight check over the last few chains might have been closer to the winner.

The Lamb ran a good race in the Flying at Feilding on Wednesday last, and if he keeps going on the correct way he should soon get on the winning list. Rowley went wrong again on the day prior to the Feilding meeting. Besides an increase of over £SOOO in the totalisator returns on the opening day at Feilding, the gate returns were over a hundred pounds better than on the corresponding day last year. When one considers that Silvernyine has had an interrupted preparation, and was making his first public Appearance as a three-year-old, he registered a" great performance to finish a good second in Wednesday's Feilding Stakes.

Mr. J. A. Taylor, of Wellington, has sold Prince Paladin and Chips to an Australian buyer. Botli gave promise in their early career, but of late have failed on many occasions.

When schooling Sir. Fanciful over hurdles at Awapuni recently, the wellknown rider H. Burt got a very bad fall, as the result of which his tongue was almost severed by his teeth. Burt’s luck has been bad for a longtime.

The Australian-lived Mister Gamp, who can be described as a. failure as a flat performer, looks like paying his way as a hurdler. He finished on very gamely to beat Pouri at Feilding last Wednesday. Unfortunately, the gelding’s owner, Mr. J. G. Collins, was not present to witness the performance, he being very ill just now. IMPROVEMENTS AT WOODVILLE. The Woodville Jockey Club’s latest improvement is a commodious and wellfurnished ladies’ room, 22 feet long by 12 feet wide, tastefully panelled and well-lighted. It is entered through the ladies’ cloak-room on the south side of the tea-kiosk, and is replete with full length mirrors, while a few restful chairs and a settee make provision for the waiting and the weary. The room has been very ingeniously devised to utilise space without addition to tile building, while at the same time the tea room has been made more convenient.
