Advice luus been received that Dr. A. M. Young, who is returning from the Old Country, sails from Sydney today by the Maunganui and will arrive in Hawera the end of next week. A Press Association message from Hokitika reports the death of Mr John Coyle, a well-known carrier, who died last night after long illness. He was aged about sixty years. Sergeant J, Henry, officer in charge of the Hawera district police, who has been on a visit to the South Island during his annual leave, returned to Hawera last evening. Sergeant Martin, who has been relieving Sergeant Henry, returned to. New Plymouth to-day. Mr F. de J. Olere, of Wellington, architect of the new Catholic Church at Hawera, was in Hawera yesterday, and left for Wellington to-day. He was a guest at the Egmont Hotel last night Mr. J. E. Henrys, the well-known liandicapper, who has been on a visit to the Old Country, is due to arrive in Auckland on Sunday by the Aorangi. The Rhodes Scholarship Committee met in Wellington yesterday. There were nine candidates for the two scholarships offered to the Dominion, and Mr. J. F. Platts-Mills (Victoria University College) and Mr. C. A. Sharp, B.A. (University of Otago), were selected. The Rt,. Hon. L. C. M. S. Amery visited the schools, the university and factories at Dunedin yesterday, and was entertained at lunch, .by the Chamber of Commerce and Manufacturers’ Association. He expressed pleasure at the physique of the children and the very modern factory machinery. He stressed the necessity for Empire co-operation so that each part might rely on the other parts for its markets. Mrs Amery visited the Karitane Home for babies and was 1 taken for a drive on the Peninsula. To-day the party will leave for Mt. Cook for a nine days’ stay.

Another of Taranaki’s old settlers, in the person of Mr Peter Vosper, passed away on Thursday evening at the residence of his daughter and .son-in-law (Mr and Mrs P- Warren, Tikorangi Road), in his 93rd year. Deceased was born in Cornwall in 1835. and arrived in Ne\y Zealand in 1875, taking up farming at Tikorangi.. He retired from farming 24 years ago- He was a. director of the Tikorangi factory', and a member of the school committee for some years. He was a staunch Methodist, cecnsionaly taking the pulpit. The following are the sons and daughters: Messrs A. R. and J. F. Vesper (Matamata), Mr A. Vospeir (Putina*. ru.ru). Miss Vosper (New Plymouth). Mrs B. C. Lawrence (Waitara), and Mrs S. D. Musker (Uruti). — “Waltara Mail.”
