ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

TIRED OF LIFE. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 1. A verdict of .suicide by gas poisoning was returned by the coroner (Mr. Young, S.M.) at an'inquest to-day into the death of Rowland Edward Cowper, who was found dead at bis home yesterday. Cowper’s dead body was .found lying in a room in which the gas had. been turned on, and at the time the discovery was made the man had been dead several hours. There was evidence that Cowper had been in indifferent health, and in- a letter which he left for his son he had written that lie was full up of life. A LITTLE GIRL’S DEATH. NAPIER, Dec. 1. At the inquest to-day concerning the death of the little girl Dorothy Leyland Green, aged 5* years, evidence disclosed that the deceased apparently was" endeavouring to gain admittance to the house through a small window, which: was fastened at varying heights by a. bolt slipping into a hole, and was not weighted. Presumably, the child opened the window, hut failed to bolt it properly, and when she had her head through it fell and pinned her there. The marks of the toes of her shoes on the wall of the house indicated that the unfortunate little girl had made efforts to regain her foothold on the block by which she had reached the window,* but when her mother arrived home the child was dead as a result of strangulation and shock. The coroner remarked it was one of the saddest cases he had had to deal with, and added that the man who made the window made ‘‘a shocking job of it.”

. DEATH WHILE UNDER) OPERATION. NAPIER, Dee. 2. At the inquest concerning the death of Catherine Gertrude Mackintosh, who was recently married, a verdict was returned of heart failure whilst under an anaesthetic, conditions being made worse by prior loss of blood due to haemorhage. The operation was considered essential to complete, abortion commenced by the deceased.
