THE COLOUR LINE.
DRAWN BY AUCKLAND SHOP-
KEEPER. QUALIFICATIONS OF A GENTLEMAN. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Dec. 2. The Maori Akarana Association has discussed correspondence with the proprietor of a city hairdressing saloon in regard to the exclusion of Maori customers, in respect of which the secretary of the association had written pointing out that some of its members held very, very responsible positions. Some were personal friends of the Prime Minister; others had conversed with the Governor-General, while others had dined with the Archbishop. The proprietor of the saloon wrote, in reply, that he had always excluded all coloured gentlemen from . his saloon, and would continue on similar lines. The secretary was instructed to reply regretting that the proprietor did not appreciate the fine effort of the Maori to equalise his social status with that of Europeans. It was also decided to state that the association considered that the quality of whiteness was not an essential to a gentleman.
