(By ‘ ‘Maecenas. ”) Weights for the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap are due oil Safciirdav next.
Just prior to her preliminary last Monday, that faint-hearted filly High Finance dashed into the rails. and gave her rider (T. Green) a nasty fall. Looking remarkably well, Desert Glow was raced' on each day of the recent Takapuna*meeting, but his form was nothing like his best. He may do better at the Auckland meeting. The recent meeting of the Takapuna Jockey Club was a great financial success, and this in face of the fact that
the weather on Monday was showery and windy. Wedding March, who was bred but afterwards leased; by Mr. R. Hannon to Mr. M. Wells, was a starter at the Takapuna. meeting in the name of his breeder (Mr. Wells’s lease having expired). Wedding March won well on Monday, and no doubt will do his ownex - good service in coming jumping races.
The untimely death of R. Reilly at the Takapuna meeting removes one of the Dominion’s best -light-weight riders. Nastori ran a surprisingly good race last Monday, and had she begun with her usual brilliancy she must have filled second place. Valkon was produced and again heavily suppoi ted on the -second day of the Takapuna meeting. Pie was well placed -and ran a solid race, hut as yet cannot be descinbed as one that will win over lengthy courses. Hipo, with anything but a good lun, finished a. close third on the first day of the Takapuna meeting, but on Monday he never got into a winning position .
Just back from Australia, where he won a, good race, and looking particularly bright, True Blood was well supported for the principal handicap on the second day of the Takapuna meeting, hut he failed to show up prominently.
The two-year-old Moehau was the medium of plunge by many at Takapuna. on Monday, but although she quickly got into a good position, she failed to hold' off Pi-odice, who was conceding Moehau 231 b, while The Begum also got up in time to rob Moehau supporters of second dividend.
As mentioned before in this paper, the three-year-old filly Ti Tree registered an exceptional performance to run second in the Takanuna Plate. On the strength of such she was solidly supported in her first “open” engagement last Monday, and duly justified the good impression formed* of her by heating a useful field over seven furlongs. After leaying the train ‘at Auckland last Friday the brilliant three-year-old Paganelli took fright, and in swerving fell on the concrete road. Luckily he was not hurt, hut became unnerved, and his trainer decided (luckily for the winner) not to run him on the first day of _ the Takapuna meeting. Paganelli was duly produced: on Monday and, showing exceptionally good form, won very easily. Over a, six furlong. course this three-year-old is exceptionally good.
King Lu is one of the best-looking racehorses in training at the present time in New Zealand, and ua at least to nine furlongs he is capable of doing well in the. best of company. In winning the chief race: at the Takanuna meeting on Monday last, King Lu was responsible for an exceptionally good effort, as he carried a big weight to lead hisi 16 opponents throughout, and when challenged in the straight by the much-boomed Valkon he easily held him off.
