CANADA’S FLAG.
NEW DESIGN
DOMINION CONTROVERSY A proposal for a new flag for Canada, js causing controversy in the Dominion, but, up to the present, the Government has not taken any official notice of the suggestions put forward. “The official flag in Canada is the Union . Jack,” said an official of the Canadian Government in London to the “Westminister Gazette,” ' ‘The to are other authorised flags for registered vessels and naval vessels. Various designs have been submitted for a new flag, but everything is in the air at present.” A prominent Canadian visitor to London told the “Westminister Gazette” that the flag cxuestion was one which urgently needed a settlement. “Some time ago a Montreal newspaper organised a competition for a ilag design,” he said, “and appointed a competent jury to judge the suggestions sent in. Several hundred .entries were sent in..
“The winning design carries the Union Jack in the left-hand top corner of a white field, and on the latter is placed a red or green maple leaf. The white field symbolises the flag of old France, which originally was powdered with golden fleur-de-lis. The Union Jack typines the allegiance of the Dominion to the Crown and her position in the commonwealth of British nations, and the maple leaf expresses the sense of Canadian nationality. “I think this design is admirable. Its adoption as our national flag would reconcile the confiding elements.”
