HAWERA METHODIST SHOW

BLOOMS AND PRODUCE

RECORD ENTRIES DISPLAYED. Competitive entries totalling more than 300 in excess of the previous highest number and a. composite array of other decorative exhibits and articles of utility were displayed at the fifth annual flower show and bazaar opened under the auspices of the liawera Methodist Church in the Winter Show Buildings this afternoon. Roses, sweet peas, and other blooms of the season, together with tastefully arranged examples of decorative art, benches laden with tempting edibles and others displaying well-grown vegetables, were among the many features which were accorded keen appreciation by the show’s many patrons. Judges and patrons alike were unstinting in their complimentary references concerning the general good standard and in their tributes to the show officials and. exhibitors who combined in the presentation of the attractive display. The show was officially opened at 3 p.m. by the Mjayor (Mr E. A. Pacey) who, with the Mayoress, was formally presented by the Rev. W. J. Oxbrow. In declaring the show open, Mr Paee.y remarked that the exhibition was the fifth of its kind held by the church. The profits were to be used for the various activities in which the church was engaged. Last year the show had, he understood, realised a profit of £SO and he sincerely hoped that the present indications of an even better surplus this year would be realised. Mr Pacey congratulated the exhibitors on the beautiful display which their entries had made possible and, in paying a tribute to the officials on their efficient attention to the organising details, he made special mention of the fine work carried out by the ladies, 'who were associated in the undertaking.

On the motion of Mr Oxbrow a vote of thanks to the Mayor and Mayoress concluded the ceremonv.

The show will be open this evening and will be continued to-morrow. A competent band of officials combinedl with the organiser (Mr. W. Crompton) and the secretary (Miss Dorothy E. Bates') in the administrative work, and busy vendors plied brisk trade at stalls on which varied articles of practical and ornamental value were offered.
