GETTING TOGETHER
NEW SPIRIT IN BRITAIN. TO SAVE THE COUNTR Y’S TRADE. BY CABLE-PRESS ASSOC! ATION—COPYRIGH'I LONDON, Nov. 28. Referring to the industrialists’ letter, Mr. Ben Tillett, speaking at Stafford, said the best brains of the capitalists must join with the best brains in the Labour movement to save the country’s trade. Without intelligent co-operation and conscientious efforts on all sides for respecting bargains, the present chaos in industry, the slackness of trade, and the army of unemployed must continue, he' said. Organic changes were essential, and all uneconomic overhead charges and uneconomic exactions of finance must ruthlessly be eliminated. Capital and Labour must discuss cost, prices, profits, and wages under the supervision of the State, and thus assure the country of full productive capacity. The “Daily Telegraph” says the Trade Union Congress Council deferred consideration of the letter till December 20, but it is understood that the majority of the Labour leaders welcome the letter and will accept the invitation to a joint conference early in the new year, especially as Mr. Hicks hinted at such a conference in his speech as president of the Trade Union Congress after Mr. Raldwin had initiated the idea in a recent speech.
