WELLINGTON, Nov. 26. yA Chinese named Lum On was sentenced by Mr Page S.M., to two months’ imprisonment for overstaying the period under a temporary permit to visit the Dominion. The Collector of Customs said that there was evidently an organised system to defy the law. Mr Page refused a request for a fine instead of imprisonment. The man will be deported at the end of the term. GUILTY OF NEGLIGENT DRIVING HAMILTON, Nov. 25. In the Supreme Court to-day John Blair, 19 years of age, who was charged with negligently driving a ear and thereby causing the deaths of Walter Thornton Reynolds and John AVard, was found guilty by the jury after three hours’ retirement. The jury made recommendations for leniency on account of prisoner’s age, and sentence was postponed until Wednesday next, Mr. .Justice Herdman making no 'objection to accused’s release from custody till Wednesday ou a bond of £IOO. ALLEGED BREAKING AND ENTER! ING. ASHBURTON, Nov. 25. At Methven to-day, Hastings Ireland, a married man, and Alexander Thomson, single, both labourers, were jointly charged with breaking and entering AY. C. Batterson’s premises on November Id. Ireland was further charged with setting fire to the premises. The accused pleaded guilty and were committed for sentence. Bail was not asked for.
DR. THACKER FINED.
CHRISTCHURCH, Nov. 25. Dr. Thacker, formerly Mayor of Christchurch, and an ex-member of Parliament. was to-day fined £1 and .costs in the Magistrate’s Court for causing an obstruction to a tram. His car was drawn up outside an hotel in (Manchester .Street waiting for some ladies to board it. Race trams came along and there was not enough clearance, if any at all, for the car to pass-. A policeman asked the chauffeur and Dr. Thacker to move the car, but-the ear was not moved. The constable’s evidence was that when he spoke to the chauffeur, Dr. Thacker said: “Take vour orders from me; not from him.’’ The chauffeur did not move tli e car and the constable said he believed Dr. Thacker was trying to make a fool of him. The obstruction was stated as 4i to 6 minutes.
