ANNUAL. DINNER). PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. Tlie annual din hot conducted by the Hawera Miniature Rifle Club to mark the close of the season and for the presentation of trophies won during the active period was held at the Islington Tea Rooms last evening. The president (Mr. P. O. VealeJ was in the chair and there were present a large number of members. A. brief toast list which opened with the customary loyal toast was honoured, interspersed with musical and elocutionary items, a most enjoyable time being spent. The president expressed his satisfaction at the large attendance and spoke in congratulatory terms of the success of the season just closed. The period had commenced with a very large and enthusiastic membership and, although this had somewhat dwindled towards the end. the club’s activities had proved most enjoyable to the members. Team shooting bad been on.e of the specialties of the period under review and the club had upheld the fine record of previous seasons. Proposing the toast of “The Dominion Miniature Rifle Association,” Mr. S, R. Veitch said he was pleased to learn that the club had recently affiliated with the association, and said be was sure that this step would not be regretted, stressed the fact that unity was strength and that the association would offer many advantages towards raising the standard of miniature rifle shooting in the Dominion.
Before presenting the trophies won during the season, the patron (Dr. W. F. Bui.st) reviewed the activities of the club during the seven years since its inception and expressed his pleasure that a number of those who had been associated with him in the formation of the club still displayed an active interest. Fie was also pleased to notice that there were a number of young members taking part in the shooting—a sport in which, he said, he' had always taken a keen interest. He then presented the trophies won as previously pit Wished. Mr. Booth proposed the toast of “The Ladies.
Replying to the toast, Mrs. Ve’tch urged that lady members should not allow their enthusiasm to flag after the season had progressed, but half-way, as had occurred during the period recently closed. She also asked the ladies to remember that when they were selected to take part in inter-club matches they should shoot fo.r the honour of the club and not for their own amusement.
The president commented on the lack of enthusiasm displayed as the season progressed. The toast of “The Press.” proposed bv Master B. Watts, was also honoured.
The chairman voiced the appreciation of the members of the valuable services rendered to the club during the season by the energetic secretary. Miss T. Ingram, who was accorded cheers of appreciation . A. vote of thanks was accorded by acclamation to* the performers who had provided the programme. During the evening items were contributed as follows: Pianoforte solos, Mrs. P. O'. Veal©. Air. W. Barleyman ; elocutionary items, Miss Mr. Hardenburg; songs, Miss Peterson, Messrs. H, Briggs, El. H. Piper..
