COURSING AT PATEA.
. ♦ CLUB NAME AMENDED. TO BE PATEA - HAWERA. At the annual meeting of the Pa tea Coursing Club, held on Friday, it was unanimously agreed, on the motion of the chairman (Mr J. A. McKenna), »e-, conded by Mr H. Neal, that the name of the club be changed to the PateaHawera Coursing Club (reports the ‘‘Patea Press-’’) It was decided further that all cours-ing be held at the enclosure at Wihenuakura. The decision was the of a visit paid to Hawera bv Mr McKenna, accompanied by the club secretary (Mr Tom Scott), on October 20, when a meeting, attended by isix' Hawera supporters of coursing, endorsed Mr McKenna’s proposal', for the amalgamation of interests of the two centres and the establishment of an organisation ■representative of South Taranaki. _ The annual report presented at Friday’s meeting recorded that during the year two successful meetings were hold, both being for two days. At the latter meeting, proceeded the repel t. the club addpd £2O to the stake, and was prohablv tlio only club in the North Island to add such a, liberal policy. , The McKenna Cup was won by Mosers Hunt and Sheild’s Our Jack, who defeated Mr F. Butcher’s Mannequin, and the Hannan Ouo by Mr Nich oils’ Moonshine, who defeated Mr Hannan’s Honest Mick. A supplementary stake at the last meeting was won hv Mr E. Hurfey’s Paphian, who beat Messrs Hunt and Sheild’® Our Jack, the McKenna. Cup winner. During tine year considerable improvements have been effected at the course, • a sum of approximately £BO having been expended. The course' and grounds are now equal to any in New Zealand, and the committee have si ill further improvements imj view. Application was made to have the New Zealand Waterloo Cup run on the club’s ground and the club w.as offering an addition of £2O to the stake, but the controlling- body decided on Ma-s----tridon ns the venne for the cup. The club intend to start early in the coursin.tr season and mn off some puppy and maiden stakes, thereby training the hares for the bigger events to follow. CREDIT OVER SEASON. The club has come through the season with a, credit balance, of £lO Is lid, which, after the heavy expendibune entailed by the ground, must bei considered highly satisfactory. We desire to thank Mr Hannan for very valuable help and advice, and lor a. silver cupWe also thank Mr Wooliright for his efforts in obtaining for U® Messrs Buchanan and Co.’s silver cup. Mr Jais. B-ourke lias very kindly offered to plough and sow down about three-quar-ters of ail acre of carrots for feed for hares next jseason. The committee very much appreciate this offer. Thanks are also due for donations and betlp from the following:—F. Spooner £l, W. Morse £lO E. Hurley £5, His Worship the Mayor £2. F. Locker £l, and F. Ramsboittom £1; also a gift of a stand for the judge from Mr R.amsbottom. Our thanks are also due to Mr J. D. G. Thomson, who has kindly acted as bon. auditor to the club. Our chairman called a meeting of coursing men at Haw-era and asked them to join up with the Patea Club. After discussion, the meeting unanimously agreed to join force® with Patea and your committee recommend that Hawera he represented on the management committee.
Jn moving the adoption of the report •>,nd balance-sheet the chairman said that unfortunately the dub had lost 20 to. H 0 hares nrior to the first- meeting held, which necessitated the entrance fees being refunded and additional money spent for hares. Under the circumstances the club was .fortunate in having come out ns well ns it had.
