LICENSING BILL.

PHASES OPPOSED. -ATTITUDE OF CHURCHES. Resolutions expressing approval of the two-issue ballot paper at licensing polls, but objecting to the fifty-five per cent, majority and the alteration of the frequency between the pods from three to six years as proposed in the Licensing Amendment Bill presented in the House of Representatives last week, were passed in certain of the Hawera. churches at yesterday’s services. “This congregation of the Alethodist church at Hawera. earnestly urges you to do all in your power to secure, in the Licensing Bill now ' before _ the House, the maintenance of a two-issue ballot paper, io be decided by a simple majority, and to oppose any attempt at extension of time between the polls, variation of the Ki ng-Country pact, or other retrograde licensing legislation,” was the text of a resolution adopted unanimously on a show of hands when proposed by the Rev. W J. Oxbrow at the morning service. A copy of the resolution is to be forwarded to the member of Parliament for the district (Air. H. G. Dickie, ALP.) and the Prime -Minister, who is in charge oi the Bill. At the morning service of the Church of Christ, conducted by Air. J. Exley, a resolution couched m similar terms anti directed to the member of the district was adopted unanimously. A similar resolution directed to the member for the district was adopted unanimously at the morning service of the Baptist Church, conducted .by the Rev J. J. North.

At the Presbyterian church morning service the Rev. R. E. Evans, also made reference to the Bill. W hile no resolution was proposed, the minister urged the congregation to give serious consideration to the subject, and advised that communications expressing ffieir feelings on the matter should be made individually to the member of Parliament for the district and the Minister in charge of the Bill.
