SHOW NIGHT SPORTS.

DOMINION CHAMPIONS COMING

Wednesday evening next, the first night of the Hawera Show, promises to be the occasion for the presentation of a notable programme of athletics in Hawera. The Hawera Amateur Athletic Club, under whose auspices the sports are to be conducted, have gone to considerable trouble to secure six of New Zealand’s best athletes to compete, and some thrilling races should be witnessed.

The capabilities of R. A. Rose, who is most popular oil tne Hawera track track are well known. H1 0 still holds the Australian and New Zealand record for the one mile run, in the sensational time of 4mins. 13 2-os.ec. At Wellington he recently returned 4mins. 34see. for the mile, but is rapidly coming into £Ollll for the New Zealand championships to be held next month and lie should make a decided cut into this time next week. C. Gibbons, who is another great miler, will meet Rose in the mile event and this is exjiected to be.a ding-dong go.

Gibbons was first home in the last one mile New Zealand championship, but Rose did not compete. J. Fleming, from Wellington, was last season’s best quarter miler and he Avon the New Zealand championship in Very good time. Newton from Wanganui, who ran second to Fleming is also a great half-miler. Fleming and Newton will fight out their quarter mile battle again.

J. Carswell, from Welling,ton is the select cyclist Avho Avill compete and is meeting Stening, of Hawera, off the scratch marks. C. H. Jenkins, of Wellington, has always figured prominently in the Wellington Provincial championships and has a string of wins to his credit over the 100 and 220 yards, lie is capable of running the 100 in a shade over evens and the 220 yards in 22sec. iStan. Lay will also compete in the .javelin throw, and his event Avil! commence punctually at 7.45 p. 111., so that there will be sufficient daylight to see if. Guy Broad, of Wanganui, the West Coast champion hurdler Avill be the scratch marker in the 120 yards hurdles events. He registered 16sec. from scratch over the 120 hurdles last season.
