SCHOOL TEACHER WELCOMED.
GATHERING AT TOKAORA

An enthusiastic gathering assembled at tiie Tokaora. Hall last evening to participate in the public welcome extended to Mrs. G. Chamberlain, the newly-appointed teacher of the school. The chairman of the School Committee (Mr. H. Finlay) piesided. Before formally introducing the guest of the evening ho remarked upon the general good conduct of the school. Mr. Finlay urged parents to send all children to" the school, and expressed the hope that in the near future the roll number would reach 39 and allow application to be made for the appointment of ail additional teacher. The chairman made eulogistic reference to the able manner in which Mrs. Chamberlain was carrying out her duties at the school.
“The children," said Mr. Finlay, "appear to be enraptured with the charming and lovable nature shown by Mrs, Chamberlain, and the excellent spirit prevailing augurs well for the future success of the school work.” He hoped that the school would have the .services of the new teacher until promotion took her elsewhere. A. beautiful bouquet arranged by Mrs. \V. Hooker was presented to Mrs. Chamberlain by Johnny Ford, one of the youngest of her pupils. The high credentials held by Mrs. Chamberlain and her ability to keep the school at the highest standard of efficiency were referred to by Mr. A. Lees, the district member of the- Taranaki Education Board, in the course of a wel'ome- voiced on behalf of the board. Mr. Lees supported- the chairman of the evening m the hope that the grade of the school would soon be advanced, and urged parents to- get on the advice tendered by Mr. Finlay. The reply on behalf of Mrs. Chamberlain was given by Mr. F. Mills, who expressed suitable thanks for the courteous remarks made by the previous speakers and the support given by the gathering. Approximately 40 couples took part in a well-balanced programme of dances, and a similar number enjoyed the entertainment provided by a cards tourney. First and second prizes among the lady players were secured by Mesdames A. Griffin and J. G. Ford, respectively, and Mr. J. Marriner proved the most successful player among the men competitors. The thanks of the committee are due to all who gave assistance with the successful social, especially Mr. S. Thrush, who directed the card games, the M.C., Mr. J. Freyne, Miss M. Washer, who contributed recitations, and the Indies who made the supper arrangements. The dance programme was continued until the early hours of the morning, and the gathering dispersed with the unanimous feeling that a very profitable and happy evening had been spent.
