OPUNAKE COURT.
YESTERDAY’S SITTING. TRUANT SCHOOLBOY. The monthly sitting of the Magistarte’s Court at Opunake was held yesterday, Mr. B. W. Tate, S.M., presiding. “Tne boy has only 300 yards to walk to the school, but he has not attended since August 23 and has a total of only 44 attendances this year out of a possible of 112,” said George Pascoe, truant officer under the Taranaki Education Board, when a native parent was charged with failing to send Ins son, aged 13 years, to school on certain days of October.. Defendant did not appear, and was convicted, the Magistrate deferring sentence until the March sitting of the court. “If the child attends regularly in the meantime, the fact will be taken info consideration,” remarked the Magistrate,” but if this does not commence immediately trouble may be expected.” CIVIL CLAIMS HEARD.
Judgment for plaintiff by default, with costs, was given in each of the following undefended civil cases: C. A. Smith v. B. Kenny, £1 18s Gd; same v. W. Hohaia, £1 16s 9d; I''. Loescli v. S' Blackwell, £3 7s 2d; S. M. Coornbe v. L. Mosen, £3O; same v. Y\. S. McLeod, £11; E. A. Poole v. W. J. Gordon, £l6 14s 3d. In judgment summons proceedings, Ratahi Fisher was ordered to pay £7 1 s 5d forthwith to Hughson’s Ltd., in default seven days’ imprisonment; Ernest W. Coornbe was ordered to pay £5 forthwith to G. Marsh, in default five days; commencing on December 11, Tai' Ngaia was ordered to pay 30s monthly to E. M. Reynolds on a claim for £l9 14s 2d; D. Ratahi was ordered to pay £4 14s 6d forthwith to J. S. Church, in default four days.; A. Kelly was ordered to pay £6 17s 4d forthwith to C. Will, in default six days; and Bernard Kenny was ordered to' pay £7 Is 7d forthwith to H. Barraclough, in default seven days.
