FREIGHT HATES COMPARED. AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. CANBERRA, Nov. 11. In the House of Representatives, speaking on Mr. Charlton’s motion of censure concerning the sale of the Commonwealth Line steamers, Mr. Coleman said that a comparison of freight rates between New Zealand and Australia would be read wTh much interest by the primary producers, whose representatives said that the Commonwealth Line did not effectively control freights. The charge for carrying frozen rabbits from New Zealand to the United Kingdom was ten shillings per ton more than from Australia, the carriage of app.es was sixpence per case more, frozen lambs 5s l()d per ton weight more; the additional freight for the carriage of beef was £1 3s 4d per ton. If Australian shippers were on the New Zealand rates they would have paid last year £239,00!) more to send their refrigerated consignments to the British markets. On the figures >f the previous year the extra amount invoked would have been £400,000.
