FIRE ON OIL LAUNCH. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, Nov. 7. A oil vessel, Te M'oa, owned by W. Wright and trading in the Manukau Harbour, narrowly escaped destruction by fire on Saturday afternoon. When discovered the blaze enveloped the engine room. It was put out with extinguishers, but the engines were badly damaged. TROUBLE AT STATE MINE. GREYiMOUTH, Nov. 7. The State mine was idle to-day. It was understood that some of the men’s lamps were stopped and the other men declined to work. Both sides are reticent. ANOTHER RADIO RECORD. "THAMES, Nov. 7. Dr. Liggins, of Thames, picked up station S'SW Chelmsford, Essex, direct, stated to be broadcasting on twentyfour metres at 4 p.m. yesferdav, summer time. Speech and music were just audible. At 5.30 o’clock an organ solo was heard and the strength was increasing. At 6 p.m. the announcer said that at 5.25 a.hi. daylight was just showing oil the horizon. At 935 p.m. he picked up the station again at good strength and held it till 12.30, giving a complete musical programme. It is thought that this is the first time English stations had been heard direct in New Zealand. DAMAGES AWARDED. j AUCKLAND, Nov. 7. A case arising out of the fatality on the ninety-mile -beach on February i . when a racing motor oar ran into a non-oam-petitor’s oar and Mrs. Elizabeth Spender, wife of Pan! Spender, of Rowene, was killed, was concluded at the Supreme Court. Bernard An-dre-we-s, a: storekeeper, (sued Victor Ferdinand Eisenhut claiming £235- as damages to his racing car, and Paul Spender claimed £IOOO co-mpensat'on for the loss of his wife. The jury awarded £175 on the first claim and £7OO on the second, this 1 amount to be divided, £4OO to the hus- | band and £IOO to each of the three children.
