\n old well was accidentally 'discovered on a section in Federal Street, Auckland, much to the surprise of the driver of a waggon. One of the wheels broke through the surface, leaving the driver perched upon a shaft that was 2oft. deep. The site was previously occupied by a cottage. The well had been long ‘ forgotten; although in the early days people used to gather there and draw water. The month of October in the north Kiiio- Country was one of the driest ever recorded. From September 25 only .93 of an inch of rain had fallen at Otorohanga, and that on four days. Last October 10.61 inches fell; in 1920 3.36 inches; 1924,- 5.95 inches; and 1523. 4.55 inches.
