SUMMER TIME BILL.

APPRECIATION TO SPONSOR

COUNCIL TAKES NO ACTION,

Support to a movement to give public expression of approval of the passing of the Summer Time Bill and appreciation of the efforts of Air T. K. Sidey, ALP., in the matter, was requested m a circular letter considered by the Hawera Borough Council last evening, when, after a short discussion, the letter was “received,” no action being The Mayor (Air E. A. Pacey) pointed out that the circular had been before the Stratford Borough Council, and that body had decided to take no action. He ‘did not think it, fitting that those who had obtained their object should “glorify it.” Air Sidey certainly deserved credit for sticking to the thing all the years lie did, but Mr Pacey thought his pertinacity might. have been put to a better cause. He did not think it warranted their making any fuss about it. Cr W. G. Strange felt that the question was a vexed one and until they 'had tried summer time out he did not think they should take any action in the matter.' Ho endorsed Air Pacey’s remarks in praise of Air Sidey’s perseverance. Cr G. J. Bayley,' while recognising AD- Sidey’s work, thought it would be a bad precedent to reward a member of Parliament in such a matter. The Mayor: “I brought it up because I wanted to give the thing a fair run. I do not want the public of Hawera to think that if no meeting is called it is because I do not want to do so.’’ He explained that there had been a good many calls on him lately to welcome visitors to the town, but he had tound it necessary to refuse a number of these requests. Cr Alorrissey said that personally, if he were in the Alayor’s position, ho would be inclined to call a meeting of citizens. Cr Strange agreed with the Alayor’s action in not acceding to many requests to welcome people to the town, saying he did not think it compatible with the Alayor’s dignity as chief citizen of the town to lend his position to advertise campaigns.
