VITAL STATISTICS.

SOUTH TARANAKI, RETURNS. REGISTRATIONS IN OCTOBER. Vital statistics of the Taranaki distinct for the month of October show an excess of births over deaths of 35, the respective totalis being 51 and- 16. The month’s figures also -show an -increase of six as -compared with -the corresponding period of 1926, when births numbered 45. Deaths in October, 1927. .show an increase of five compared with October, 1927, a-nd marriages during the respective months were iright and nine. The returns of births, deaths and marriages during the month just ended •in the various centres are a-s u-nde-r, the figures -relating to October, 1926, being shown in parentheses for -the purpose of comparison:— Hawera: Births 27 (18); deaths 6 (6) ; marriages 5 (4). Eltham : Births 2 (5) ; deaths 2 (nil) ; marriages, nil (3). Kaponga: Births, 6 (10); deaths, nil (nil) ; marriages,, nil (nil). Manai a : Births 5 (4) ; deaths nil (3) ; marriages 1 (1). Opunake: Births 3 (4); -deaths nil (I) ; marriages 1 (nil). Pa tea: Births 4 (1); deaths 5 (nil); marriages 1 (nil). Waverley: Births 4 (3); deaths 3 (1); marriages nil (1). , Totals: Births 51 (45); death-s 16 (II) ; marriages 8 (9). THE WEATHER.

The official records kept at the Hawera Post Office show that rain fell on I only ten days during the month, the total being 2.5 in. The maximum for a single day was ,99in. recorded on Tuesday, October 22. The figures show a substantial decline as compared with October, 1926. when -rain was recorded on twenty-two days, the total being 9.25 in., with a maximum of 2.25 in. for a single day. The warm rain which, fell yesterday evening and to-day should have a beneficial effect on pastures throughout the countryside. BANKRUPTCY PETITIONS.

Petitions- in bankruptcy dealt with during the month by the D.O.A- in the South Taranaki district number five. No petitions were filed during October of last year. To date -the total for th-e year is 26. as compared with 19 to the end of October, 1926.
