FOREST ABLAZE

810 FIRE AT HANMER. FANNED BY STRONG WIND ONE HUNDRED ACRES DESTROYED (by telegraph —press association.) CHRISTCHURCH, .Oct. 22. Jollie’s Pass Hotel was destroyed by fire at Hanmer last evening. Sparks blew into a plantation and this morning several thousand ;i/-ros of State forests were reported to be ablaze fanned by a strong north wester. One hundred acres were destroyed before the fire-fighters got control. Had heavy showers of rain not fallen between seven and S o’clock the amouiii of damage would have been incalculably greater. At one stage the task of checking seined almost too great. The fire at the hotel was discovered at three o’clock in the morning and the flames quickly had a good hold. 'The occupants were unable fro save anything, making a franzied rush for safety.
