OKAIAWA.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) FARMERS’ UNION. At a meeting of the local branch of the Farmers’ Union on Tuesday evening seven new members were elected. At next month’s meeting the matter of the root crops competitions will be dealt with. It is desirable that more members should take a more active interest in the affairs of the union by attending the monthly meetings. It is always ecouraging to have a good attendance. SUMMER. TIME. At tlic foregoing- meeting it rvas decided not to recognise the summer time regulations in regard to the time of meetings that period, those present saying that if the time was advanced an hour they would be unable to attend. The farmers, as a body, have shown in an unmistakeable manner how they stand in regard to this matter. STOATS AND WEASELS.

A few days ago the “’Star” reported an experience of a Mangatoki settler with one of the above pests. A local farmer also came into contact with one of taem during the present week. lie was threshing out his wheat, and when the top sheaves were removed evidence of the presence of a stoat or weasel became apparent, and were observed at various points right through the stack. There were several nests lined with feathers and mouse skins, the bodies of freshly-killed mice, young thrushes and blackbirds, and then a nest of six young stoats. The old stoat lay low until the third to last sheaf was lifted, when she was promptly despatched by a couple of dogs. CROQUET CLUB. The local croquet club lias just erected a small pavilion at the courts, all the work having been done by voluntary labour generously donated by Messrs. W. Hackett, W. Baker, D. Tebbutt and 11. R. Penny. The club is having a shop day in Hawera on Thursday next and would be thankful for any; suitable articles for disposal.
