LABOUR DAY.

A POPULAR HOLIDAY. MANY ATTRACTIONS. Labour Day, which is observed on the fourth Monday in October, is always a popular day for recreation and sport throughout the Dominion, as it is all over Taranaki. The day comes just when all summer sports are beginning their season, and in consequence gives the various clubs a fine opportunity to have a full and interesting day’s activity. In addition, a number of racing clubs, amongst which is Waver ley, one of the most popular on the coast, have their annual meetings. Local amateur athletes are having a field day with a comprehensive programme of events, for which their club has received excellent nominations. Leading runners from other centres on the coast are expected. There will he pi ay on the cricket field, on the tennis lawns, on the bowling greens, and on the croquet lawns under the auspices of the various clubs. The Hawera Golf Club will hold a tourney to run all day —-medal and bogey handicaps, with putting competitions. making* in all a most interesting dav’is sport. Boy Scouts representing the various South Taranaki troops will assemble at King Edward Park, where a rally will be held. About 100 are expected to attend.

Fishing is m full swing, and the rivers will claim . a large number of devotees of the sport. The Ohawe bench .season is just beginning.
